A Sensory Adventure and Mathematical Marvels in Willow Class!

Willow Class has been bursting with excitement this week as they delved into the vibrant world of "Handa's Surprise"! The class embarked on a sensory-rich journey inspired by the beloved story of Handa and her basket of delicious fruits.

The adventure began with attentive listening as the children were captivated by the tale of Handa's walk to see her friend Akeyo. But the real surprise came when a mysterious package arrived, brimming with the very fruits featured in the story! Imagine the children's delight as they discovered mangoes, bananas, pineapples, and even guava!

The learning experience quickly transformed into a multi-sensory exploration. The children were encouraged to touch the textures of the different fruits, from the smooth skin of a ripe avocado to the prickly surface of a pineapple. Aromatic scents filled the classroom as they inhaled the sweet fragrances, each fruit offering its own unique perfume. Finally, the moment they had all been waiting for – the tasting! One by one, the children sampled the exotic fruits, their faces lighting up with delight (and perhaps a few grimaces!). A class vote was then held to determine the most popular fruit, providing a fun and engaging way to introduce data handling and simple counting. We then thought about the different adjectives we could use to describe each fruit both how it looks and how it tasted!

Beyond the delicious discoveries of "Handa's Surprise," Willow Class also tackled the exciting challenges of addition and subtraction in maths. The children have been working hard to understand the concepts of adding and taking away, using a variety of resources to help them visualise the operations.
